The family moved from Gloucester while he was still young, but he remembered helping in his grandfather's coal business, sometimes shov 2 CONC elling coal from their railway wagons. 2 CONT He was educated at Prescot Grammar School, and then trained to be a teacher at the College of St Mark & St John, in Chelsea, London. 2 CONT He married Elizabeth (Betty) Turner on 25th March, 1940 in Rainhill. They went on cycling holidays in North Wales together. They lived at 18 Brookfield Avenue until they sold it for ¹2,250 on 31st August 1961 and bought another at 24 Knowsley Roa 2 CONC d for ¹3,500. 2 CONT Due to an ear infection while young after a mastoid operation, he could only hear in one ear, and was not called up during World War II: he became an Air Raid Warden and cycled to school. He later suffered from pernicious anaemia. He used to smok 2 CONC e cigarettes, but later gave them up. 2 CONT He taught at several schools in the Liverpool area: the last before retiring was Maidford Road County Primary school, where he taught for 36 years from 1st February 1938 until he retired in July 1974. He went on summer camps with the boys in 193 2 CONC 8 & 39 to Ballajora in the Isle of Man, and to Pentrevoelas and Dyserth in North Wales after the war. His previous school, St Cleopas, was lit by gas and heated by coal fires. 2 CONT Although he owned a full driving licence, he never took a driving test as he started driving before tests were required. He owned a variety of cars, including a Lanchester, Morris 8, two Morris Minors, Morris 1100 and 1300, MG 1100, Austin Allegro 2 CONC , Austin Maxi, Minis and Metros. 2 CONT He was quite musical, and could play the piano. Although he was a member of the Church of England, while his childen were growing up as Catholics, he did not attend church until after they had left home. 2 CONT After his retirement, he became a Conservative Councillor on the local council and was re-elected a number of times. He was a keen gardener. 2 CONT He died at his home in Rainhill in November 1989 after experiencing heart problems for some time. 2 CONT (CGS) 1 NOTE Played piano. Division IV 2 CONT includes advanced perspective, a selection by both the student and the 2 CONT teacher, progressive snapshot drawing and illustration. 2 CONT In July 1931, she gained a school certificate credit in English Literature, 2 CONT History, Geography and French, having also studied scripture, mathematics, 2 CONT Latin, botany, art and music. The following year (July 1932), she was awarded 2 CONT subsidiary standard in English Literature and History for the Higher School 2 CONT Certificate. In July 1933, she reached the required standard in both English 2 CONT Literature and History. 2 CONT Ladies singles tennis champion at Rainhill Recreation & Tennis Club 1934-6. 2 CONT Suffered from thyroid problems in autumn 94, then had a stroke early in 1995. 2 CONT Betty was admitted to hospital following a fall at home at the end of January 2 CONT but her condition deteriorated after further strokes. She died in hospital on 2 CONT March 2nd.
