1 NOTE                 GEORGE THOMAS WALTER SPILLER (1911 - 1989)
2 CONT Born in St James' Street, Gloucester, on 20th August 1911, he had one elder sister, Rose Irene (Renee) Spiller. The family moved from Gloucester while he was still young, but he remembered helping in his grandfather's coal business, sometimes shov
2 CONC elling coal from their railway wagons.
2 CONT He was educated at Prescot Grammar School, and then trained to be a teacher at the College of St Mark & St John, in Chelsea, London.
2 CONT He married Elizabeth (Betty) Turner on 25th March, 1940 in Rainhill. They went on cycling holidays in North Wales together. They lived at 18 Brookfield Avenue until they sold it for ¹2,250 on 31st August 1961 and bought another at 24 Knowsley Roa
2 CONC d for ¹3,500.
2 CONT Due to an ear infection while young after a mastoid operation, he could only hear in one ear, and was not called up during World War II: he became an Air Raid Warden and cycled to school. He later suffered from pernicious anaemia. He used to smok
2 CONC e cigarettes, but later gave them up.
2 CONT He taught at several schools in the Liverpool area: the last before retiring was Maidford Road County Primary school, where he taught for 36 years from 1st February 1938 until he retired in July 1974. He went on summer camps with the boys in 193
2 CONC 8 & 39 to Ballajora in the Isle of Man, and to Pentrevoelas and Dyserth in North Wales after the war. His previous school, St Cleopas, was lit by gas and heated by coal fires.
2 CONT Although he owned a full driving licence, he never took a driving test as he started driving before tests were required. He owned a variety of cars, including a Lanchester, Morris 8, two Morris Minors, Morris 1100 and 1300, MG 1100, Austin Allegro
2 CONC , Austin Maxi, Minis and Metros.
2 CONT He was quite musical, and could play the piano. Although he was a member of the Church of England, while his childen were growing up as Catholics, he did not attend church until after they had left home.
2 CONT After his retirement, he became a Conservative Councillor on the local council and was re-elected a number of times. He was a keen gardener.
2 CONT He died at his home in Rainhill in November 1989 after experiencing heart problems for some time.

2 CONT includes advanced perspective, a selection by both the student and the
2 CONT teacher, progressive snapshot drawing and illustration.
2 CONT In July 1931, she gained a school certificate credit in English Literature,
2 CONT History, Geography and French, having also studied scripture, mathematics,
2 CONT Latin, botany, art and music. The following year (July 1932), she was awarded
2 CONT subsidiary standard in English Literature and History for the Higher School
2 CONT Certificate. In July 1933, she reached the required standard in both English
2 CONT Literature and History.
2 CONT Ladies singles tennis champion at Rainhill Recreation & Tennis Club 1934-6.
2 CONT Suffered from thyroid problems in autumn 94, then had a stroke early in 1995.
2 CONT Betty was admitted to hospital following a fall at home at the end of January
2 CONT but her condition deteriorated after further strokes. She died in hospital on
2 CONT March 2nd. She was a catholic.

1 NOTE Rose Ann George was born at her parents' home,  21 St James Street, Gloucester.
2 CONT She is described as a scholar aged 3 in the 1881 census with her parents.
2 CONT She was confirmed in Gloucester Cathedral by the Bishop of Gloucester
2 CONT and Bristol on Thursday, March 9th 1893. Her first communion was
2 CONT made on Easter Day, also in 1893, at St James church. Moved to Rainhill in
2 CONT 1913 with Albert, her husband, but returned to stay with her parents during
2 CONT the war (1914-18) while Albert was away. She returned to Rainhill, which was
2 CONT not like Gloucester, since it had no pavements! With Albert, they lived at
2 CONT 234 Rainhill Road, and The Porches in Rainhill. She went on a cruise with
2 CONT Albert for their 25th wedding anniversary. During World War II, she was living
2 CONT at Ingleton, 525 Warrington Road, Rainhill and allowed at least three families
2 CONT of evacuees to stay: one family came from Kent and the Corletts from Liverpool
2 CONT Frequently, she visited the Isle of Man, staying at Creg Malin, and visiting
2 CONT the Villa Marina. She was often seen knitting socks, gloves, etc.
2 CONT She was cremated at Widnes crematorium.

2 CONC d the milk from a horse drawn float. After the war, she also ran the "Creg Malin" hotel, which was at 13 Empress Drive, Douglas, on the Isle of Man. She retired and eventually died there.

2 CONT hair-dressing shop in Brunswick Road, Liverpool 6. While in Wales, she
2 CONT joined the Townswomens Guild, becoming President of the local branch. She
2 CONT kept a dachshund dog named Brunnhilde. She was also a keen gardener and could
2 CONT play the piano.
2 CONT She went on foreign holidays with her friend Margo Bannister, on a cruise to
2 CONT Norway (1971) and an air tour to Pompeii. She also visited Naples.

2 CONT the family to 6 Sheil Road, Liverpool 7 until 1926, when he moved to
2 CONT 91 Thomas Lane with his mother. At Sheil Road, he built and operated the
2 CONT first radio in the road (in the attic). This was a crystal set.
2 CONT When he married in 1931, he moved to a flat in Onslow Road with his wife
2 CONT Muriel. They were married in both the Anglican and Roman Catholic churches.
2 CONT George would not marry until he could support both his wife and his mother.
2 CONT He was a catholic.
2 CONT They moved to 32 Score Lane in 1933 (1934?). Just before war broke out in
2 CONT 1939, the family moved to Whitegates, Rhos-on-Sea, North Wales, but the next
2 CONT year they moved a short distance to New Llivior, Penrhyn Bay.
2 CONT From then, he lived in Liverpool during the week at Score Lane, but then went
2 CONT home to his family in Penrhyn Bay at weekends. When his friend (who had been
2 CONT best man at his wedding) was bombed out, he rented Score Lane to his friend
2 CONT and lived with his mother again during the week at Thomas Lane.
2 CONT He worked for the Automatic Telephone and Electric Company, which was
2 CONT later taken over by the Plessey Company. He worked at the central Liverpool
2 CONT site, designing control rooms for power stations, including Trawsfynedd and
2 CONT Bristol. He also worked on automatic control of the electricity grid.
2 CONT In 1960, he went on a business trip to Winnipeg, Regina and Toronto in Canada
2 CONT and later to Portugal.
2 CONT He owned an Austin(?), a 1925 Armstrong Siddeley, a dark blue 1935 Rover
2 CONT JC3373, an Austin A50, a beige Hillman Minx TCA763, anf lastly a 1967
2 CONT Singer Vogue. He was a singer, and also smoked both cigarettes and cigars.
